STEPHEN WRIGHT

For over 30 years Stephen Wright has worked extensively as an artist and designer. Initially in printed textiles and then at his own design company. For the last 20 years he has worked solely as an artist.

He graduated in 1978 from Liverpool Polytechnic with a 1st class Honours degree in Printed Textiles and then in 1980 with an MA in Fine Art Textiles at Manchester University.

During the 1980s he produced printed textile and fashion collections under his own label which incorporated his own one-off hand painted and hand printed textiles. These collections were shown in. Italy, Paris and London.

From 1985 to 1995 he ran his own stationary company, designing, producing and marketing his own designs. During this time, he was selling to the top end of the market at Harvey Nichols, Harrods, Liberty and Selfridges in London and was exporting to Japan, Australia and the USA.

However, he became increasingly disillusioned with the design world and wanted to start his journey all over again. In 1988, by chance, he began to watch a series of programmes on TV called Journeys to the Outside. The series hosted by Jarvis Cocker was about outsider art and outsider environments.

He knew absolutely nothing about outsider art and was blown away. This series really inspired his new direction. H began work on his ‘House of Dreams Museum’ within his home and garden in East Dulwich, in south east London. Every surface inside and outside is being adorned with found and bought objects from many countries around the world including India, Mexico, Haiti and France.

Things like false teeth, hair, bottle tops old disabled dolls, masks and hand-written memory boards which recall important and difficult events in his life.

In 2019 he saw about 2,000 visitors form all around the world on the museum open days. The ‘House of Dreams Museum’ is a diary of his present life and his former lives. The museum has been bequeathed to the National trust of Great Britain for future generations to view.
